ESC programming

I have quite a few PNP models, and recently started to upgrade a couple of them.
Re-programming anonymous ESCs turned out to be more difficult than I anticipated.
The only ESCs with markings came from Eflite - no problem there.
A Freewing EDF had an ESC that didn't conform with Freewing's programming manual, but

it did conform with Hobbyking's. Go figure!
On the other hand, the ESC in a plane that is a captive brand of Hobbyking did not conform

The good news is that setting the max and min throttle settings seems to be done consistently.
